There are currently three main elven communities in World of Warcraft that have their origins in Quel'Thalas: Quel'Dorei (high elves), Sin'Dorei (blood elves), and Ren'Dorei (void elves). Two of these communities, Quel'Dorei and Ren'Dorei, are members of the Alliance, while the Sin'Dorei, the largest group, remain loyal to the Horde and currently rule Quel'Thalas and live there. The high elves, like the abyssal elves, are expelled from the kingdom by the leaders of the blood elves. The Quel'Dorei were exiled sometime after the Third War by Lord Regent Lor'Themar Theron. And, although the time of exile, as well as the name of the one who gave the order to exile Ren'Dorei, is unknown to us, we learn from the scenario of recruiting the nightborne into the Horde that this was demanded by High Magister Rommath. Currently, there are serious conflicts between these groups of elves, separating the Horde and the Alliance, however, their own internal conflicts began much earlier, during the time when King Anasterian Sunstrider ruled Quel'Thalas.
The blood elves of Silvermoon City have joined the Horde ahead of the Burning Legion's new assault on Azeroth. When their prince Kael'thas traveled to Outland in search of a new source of magical power, Lor'themar Theron became temporary ruler, under whose leadership and with the help of the Forsaken, the blood elves were able to dislodge the Scourge from the lands of their kingdom. The true intentions of Kael'thas was later revealed as he tried to summon Kil'jaeden to Azeroth, and the former subjects abandoned the prince. In the absence of an official leader, Silvermoon City is ruled by Lor'themar Theron, Haldaron Brightwing, and High Magister Rommath. But the blood elves didn't come out of nowhere. Many years and many decisions led to the point where most of the survivors in Quel'Thalas adopted a new name, a new destiny. The elves closed the gates of Quel'Thalas and sealed its borders shortly after the Second War. The Windrunner clan, which has always defended Silvermoon City, has significantly thinned and lost its former power. Sylvanas herself was very open, unlike her king. On one occasion, she even argued with Prince Kael'thas so that Nathanos Marris could join the ranks of her Rangers. Marris became the first and only human ranger commander, a sign that the Windrunners did not judge a book by its cover.
