Text to Speech

Listen to any text read aloud by your browser

Speech is generated by your browser, so your text is not sent to our server. The choice of voices depends on your device and browser: Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome offer the most natural ones.

How to turn text into speech

Step 1

Type or paste the text into the field

Step 2

Choose the language and the voice, and set the speed and the pitch

Step 3

Press “Speak” and listen, and pause or stop at any time

How the text reader works

Type or paste a text, choose the “Language” and the “Voice”, and press “Speak”: the text is read aloud from the beginning, and a bar shows how far the reading has got. “Pause” stops the reading, “Resume” continues it, and “Stop” ends it. “Speed” makes the voice faster or slower, from half to double speed, and “Pitch” makes it higher or lower. Long texts are read sentence by sentence, so even a whole article works, and the tool remembers your voice and settings for your next visit. Ctrl+Enter starts the reading from the keyboard.

The voices come from your device and your browser, so the list differs between computers and phones. Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome offer the most natural voices, and on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS you can add more voices in the system settings. Most voices work on your device, but the online voices of Edge and Chrome send the text to Microsoft or Google to speak it; our server never receives it. Browsers can speak a text but not record it, so the tool plays the speech but cannot save it as an MP3 file. Listening helps to proofread a text, to learn how words of a foreign language sound and to rest your eyes.
