How to number lines

Paste a list, a script, a poem or any other text, and every line gets a number at the start. Choose how the numbers look: 1. or 1) or 1:, in round or square brackets, with a dash or followed by a tab, which puts the numbers in a separate column when you paste the list into a spreadsheet. You can start from any number and add leading zeros, so that the numbers from 01 to 99 line up neatly.

Empty lines are skipped by default, so the numbering of a list with paragraphs stays continuous; turn the option off to number every line, empty ones too. The tool also works the other way round: choose “Remove numbers” to strip the numbers from the start of the lines, for example from a numbered list copied from a document or code copied with its line numbers. Everything happens in your browser.
