Hash Generator

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 and CRC32 of a text or a file

Hashes

Everything happens in your browser: your text is never sent anywhere.

    How to generate a hash

    Step 1

Type or paste your text, or open a file

    Step 2

Choose hex or Base64 and add an HMAC key if you need one

    Step 3

Copy the hash you need or compare it with a checksum

What a hash is and what it is for

A hash function turns any text or file into a short fingerprint of a fixed length. The same input always gives the same hash, and the smallest change, even a single letter, gives a completely different one. That makes hashes useful to check that a downloaded file is intact, to compare files without opening them and to create identifiers. The generator calculates MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and CRC32 at the same time, as hexadecimal or Base64, and updates them as you type. Text is hashed as UTF-8.

To check a download, open the file with “Hash a file” and paste the checksum from the website into “Compare with a hash”: the tool shows which hash matches. Enter a secret key to get HMAC signatures, which many APIs use to sign requests. Files up to 100 MB are hashed right in your browser and are never uploaded. Keep in mind that MD5 and SHA-1 no longer protect against deliberate forgery: for security, use SHA-256 or stronger, and never store passwords as plain hashes.
