How Roman numerals work

Roman numerals use seven letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. Their values are added from left to right, so XVI is 10 + 5 + 1 = 16, except when a smaller numeral stands before a larger one: then it is subtracted, so IV is 4, IX is 9, XL is 40 and CM is 900. A letter is never repeated more than three times in a row, which is why the largest number in the standard system is 3999, MMMCMXCIX. There is no Roman numeral for zero.

You can convert a whole list at once, one item per line or separated by commas, and dates such as 30.09.2026 are converted part by part, which is popular for tattoos, engravings and wedding invitations. Numerals written in an unusual way, such as IIII on clock faces, are still read, and the converter shows the usual way to write them.
