Read the score and shorten the longest sentences
Readability formulas measure two things that make a text hard to read: long sentences and long words. The Flesch Reading Ease score combines the average number of words per sentence and syllables per word into a number from 0 to 100: the higher it is, the easier the text. A score of 60 to 70 is plain language that most adults read without effort, and below 30 the text is very difficult. For English texts the tool also shows the Flesch–Kincaid grade level, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman–Liau, the Automated Readability Index and LIX, and for every text the longest sentences, the first ones to shorten.
Every language needs its own version of the formula, because words in German or Russian are naturally longer than in English. The checker uses the Amstad formula for German, Szigriszt-Pazos (INFLESZ) for Spanish, Kandel–Moles for French, GULPEASE for Italian, Douma for Dutch, Martins for Portuguese, Oborneva for Russian and Ateşman for Turkish, and LIX for Swedish, Danish and all other languages. Choose the language of your text next to the score. Syllables are counted by rules, so the result is an estimate: use it as a guide and trust your readers more than any number.
