How to encode and decode ROT13

Step 1

Type or paste your text or the ROT13 code

Step 2

Choose ROT13, ROT18, ROT47 or ROT5

Step 3

Copy the result: the same step decodes it again

What ROT13 is

ROT13 replaces every letter with the letter 13 places after it in the alphabet: A becomes N, B becomes O, and N becomes A again. Because the Latin alphabet has 26 letters, applying ROT13 twice gives back the original text, so the same tool both encodes and decodes. Since the early days of Usenet, people have used ROT13 to hide spoilers, puzzle answers and punchlines, so that nobody reads them by accident. It isn't encryption and protects nothing: anyone can decode it in a second.

ROT13 changes only the Latin letters A–Z. The tool also has three related variants: ROT5 rotates the digits by 5, ROT18 combines ROT13 and ROT5, and ROT47 shifts all visible ASCII characters, letters, digits and punctuation, by 47 places, which makes the text even less readable. Each of them decodes itself when applied again. To encode text in other alphabets, use the Caesar cipher with any shift.
