Transliteration writes the letters of one alphabet with the letters of another, so that names, addresses and places can be read by anyone: Москва becomes Moskva, Αθήνα becomes Athina, とうきょう becomes tōkyō and 서울 becomes seoul. Choose the alphabet and the system, type or paste your text, and the Latin version appears as you type. Digits, punctuation and words that are already in Latin letters stay as they are, and capital letters stay capital.
Russian has four systems: ICAO, used in Russian international passports (Щербакова becomes Shcherbakova), BGN/PCGN, used for place names on English-language maps, and the two systems of GOST 7.79-2000, used in libraries and academic texts: system B (Shherbakova) and system A, which is the same as ISO 9 and writes every letter as one letter (Ŝerbakova). Ukrainian and Bulgarian follow their official national systems, Greek follows ELOT 743, as in Greek passports, Japanese follows the Hepburn system and Korean the Revised Romanization. In Japanese, only hiragana and katakana are converted: kanji stay as they are. The last option goes the other way and turns Russian typed in Latin letters back into Cyrillic.
